The Government has placed a “spotlight on maternity” by asking all maternity service providers to make a public commitment to contribute towards “achieving the national ambition and improve maternity outcomes”. It recognises “that many across the maternity world have been striving to overcome patient safety problems at a local level for some time”.

The guidance document has themes including:

  • Building strong leadership in maternity services
  • Building capability and skills for all maternity staff
  • Sharing progress and lessons learnt across the system
  • Improving data capture in maternity services

This is another call for organisations to have an appropriate focus on improving safety and outcomes (from the Board down) by developing a bespoke Safety Improvement Plan for maternity, improving co-communication between team and learning from mistakes. All very sensible.
